Evolution of a Dream

Sharing of common vision of ‘meeting the needs of the poor’ by three significant persons - Rev. Dr. Vinay Kumar Samuel, a development economist from India, Mr. David Bussau, development consultant from Australia and Mr. businessman from the US, led to a moment called Micro Enterprise Development, which could help to restore hope, dignity and self-worth to the poor on the country. The two overseas friends so motivated the Reverend that, he shared the thought provoking vision with Mr. Jagadish Devadasen, an industrialist, which captured his imagination to implement in the field. In 1979, the vision took wings with the launching of Micro Enterprise Development program with a small sum of Rs.3000/- by providing financial assistance to two young people to start small businesses. In 1983 this vision and its successful implementation in the field was shared with Mr. David Lobo, a businessman who agreed to join hands with Rev. Vinay Kumar Samuel and Mr. Jagadish Devadasen in their endeavor to help the poor.

This vision led endeavor to assist poor gave birth to The Bridge Foundation, a Charitable Trust in 1984 under the trusteeship of Rev. Vinay Kumar Samuel, Mr. Jagadish Devadasen and Mr. David Lobo. Mr. Collin R Timms a banker and businessman joined TBF as Trustee in 1999.  Little did these committed Individuals know that their value based and vision driven concept of 1979 would grow into a leading Micro Enterprise Development Institution in South India. In 2002, to give greater emphasis on micro enterprise development, decision was taken to shift focus of enterprise development from Non Governmental Organization, by establishing a full fledged Micro Finance establishment with poverty focus, resulted in setting up of Non Bank Finance Company.

The Bridge Foundation is affiliated to Opportunity International, a global network of seven support partners located in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, France, Germany and Australia and 60 implementing agencies spread throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean.

TBF’s endeavor to reach the poor and marginalized was well supported by various support partners across the globe and they shared TBF’s vision and extended whole-hearted support.  Their technical, monetary and moral support enabled TBF to take the gigantic task of reaching the un-reached and making difference in the lives of the families of the poor and their communities.

Visionaries who planted the seed of micro enterprise development in the form of TBF and nurtured it to grow into a great institution, are still leading the organization in reaching and empowering the poor, with the same enthusiasm and commitment even after two and half decades.

“Will there be any hope for the poor” – Amrtya Sen’s words rings true in the ears of every staff member of TBF team.  Executive Directors, past and present as heads of the organization, have enthusiastically guided and contributed their might in shaping the organization in achieving the mission.  Every staff member, some are working for a many years and others who joined with commitment and vision, are trying their best to reach the poorest of the poor to provide access to basic financial services.
